Pack This!

Updated: Apr 1, 2023

I try to always take a small carryon suitcase no matter where I go whether it is two weeks in Europe or a week on a tropical island. Managing a carryon is much easier than full size luggage..

I found it helps me to reduce unnecessary items from my suitcase and only bring the absolute necessities. I always take a small foldable Tote in my suitcase that I can use to bring home souvenirs from my trip. Also, a smaller suitcase is so much easier to navigate through unfamiliar terrain. trying to decide what to pack can often be a daunting task. That being said, for most of us that idea is simply not practical. Color coordinate your outfits. Do you really need more than 2 pairs of shoes? Clothes that can do double duty are a plus. Layer on your flight.

Tip #1 - Shoes are the enemy of carry-on luggage — so I wear the bulkiest pair on the plane.

Shoes take up SO much space. As a result, I only bring two pairs of shoes whenever I travel — usually a pair of sneakers that I wear on the plane and a pair of sandals for warm destinations or nice leather shoes for cooler or city destinations. A nice sandal and good walking shoes, will get you through must of your trip. In the winter, a warm boot might also be a necessity.

Tip #2 - Packing Cubes

Packing cubes are the life saver you didn't know you needed. They help keep clothes organized in your suitcase as well as make a handy dirty clothes container.

Tip #3 - Accept the fact that you will have to do a little laundry

I always travel with a sink stopper. This comes in so handy for washing small items in your bathroom sink. In a pinch you can cover your drain with a plastic baggie and filled with small coins.

Tip #4 - Make sure everything in your suitcase is security proof.

When connecting at some airports, you may experience a second security check. Having your toiletry items in a clear bag will help the process move so much faster.

Tip #5 - Finally

Check your airline for baggage restrictions. Pack only 2/3 of your luggage. And remember that what you take with you will have to be schlepped around by you. So small and light should be key.

Don't worry if you forgot something

The worry that "I will forget something" and then you usually do anyway. What do you really need to take with you? A credit card and passport. Most everything else can be purchased at your destination.
