Renting and Insuring a Car in Ireland ☘️

Welcome, fellow travelers! Planning a trip to Ireland? Well, buckle up and get ready for an unforgettable ride! With its stunning landscapes, lively cities, and charming villages, Ireland is a destination that begs to be explored at your own pace. And what better way to do that than with a rental car? I strongly urge you to consider renting a car in Ireland. It's a common misconception that you can explore the country solely using public transportation, but trust me, you'll be missing out on so much by not opting for an Ireland car hire. Don't just take my word for it – countless travelers have regretted not having the freedom and flexibility that comes with a rental car in Ireland. So, buckle up, and let's embark on a memorable road trip across the Emerald Isle!

1. It's All About the Left: Now, before you jump behind the wheel, remember, in Ireland, they drive on the left side of the road. So, if you're used to driving on the right, prepare yourself for a bit of brain acrobatics. But worry not! Take it slow, keep calm, and soon you'll get the hang of it. Just remember to check your blind spots and always look both ways before crossing junctions.

2. Navigating the Narrow Roads: Ah, the mystical Irish roads! While they may not be as wide as the highways you're used to, they are full of character and will lead you to hidden gems. Be ready to encounter narrow lanes, winding bends, round-abouts, and the occasional sheep blocking your way. Embrace the adventure, take your time, and enjoy the scenic drives. And if you find yourself stuck behind a tractor, well, consider it a chance to soak in the countryside views.

3. Booking Your Rental Car: When it comes to renting a car in Ireland, it's best to plan ahead. Start by comparing prices and offers from different rental companies. Consider factors like the size of the car (smaller is better for navigating rural areas, fuel efficiency, and whether you want an automatic or manual transmission. Don't forget to check if the rental company offers extras like GPS (we used our google maps, don't forget the car charger for your phone) or child seats. And while you're at it, keep an eye out for any hidden fees or insurance requirements. We booked a medium SUV for 4 adults including luggage.

4. Insurance, the Necessary Evil: Ah, insurance. It's like the broccoli of car rentals – not the most exciting part, but you need it. Car rental companies typically offer Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW) as the standard insurance options. These cover you in case of accidents or theft, but there's usually an excess amount you'll still be liable for. Consider purchasing additional coverage to bring that excess down to a more manageable level. Better safe than sorry, right? Also check with the credit card company you booked your car with. Some Elite credit cards will cover car insurance while driving in Ireland, if you are one of the lucky ones, print, print, print your documents proving you have the necessary coverage before your arrive at the rental counter. I assumed my credit card covered my ride, after over 30 minutes on the phone, I discovered I was not covered and had to fork out the hefty insurance payment, However, another card we had would have covered our insurance if I had original used it to book the rental. If I had only done my research first. Never settle for less! Always read the insurance policy details before signing any contracts. Ensure you fully understand the coverage and any potential hidden fees. It's essential to be well-informed and confident in your insurance options so that you can enjoy your road trip without any unexpected surprises.

5. Parking and Picnics: Now, let's talk about two essential elements of any Irish road trip: parking and picnics. When exploring cities like Dublin or Galway, parking can be a bit of a challenge. Look for public parking lots or opt for paid parking garages to avoid the stress of hunting for a spot. And when you're out in the countryside, take advantage of the beautiful landscapes and have a picnic! Pack some sandwiches, grab a blanket, and enjoy a leisurely meal surrounded by Ireland's natural beauty.

Tips: Bring a car phone charger and download the offline google maps of Ireland, you will not regret either of these decisions. as cell service can be spotty in certain parts of the Island. We spend our first night near Dublin airport so we could get used to the car after a long flight. Swords is a lovely first stop town outside of Dublin, about a 20 minute drive from Dublin Airport.

Renting a car in Ireland opens up a world of possibilities for exploring this enchanting country. From the picturesque Ring of Kerry to the rugged Cliffs of Moher, having your own wheels gives you the freedom to create your own adventure. So, get ready to embrace the Irish roads, practice your left-side driving skills, and embark on a journey filled with laughter, sheep-dodging, and unforgettable memories.
