Packing for the Emerald Isles in Summer

Updated: Jul 10, 2023

Packing for any trip can be a daunting task, but with the unpredictable weather in Ireland, even during summer, it can be tricky to know what to pack and what clothes to wear in Ireland. Ireland is known for its changeable weather, so visitors should always be prepared with layers.

Pack some t-shirts, hoodies, a jacket, and a raincoat so you have anything from rainy weather to bright days covered. For colder days, a jumper and some slim jumpers are a must as well, especially if visiting any areas in the west of the country. Don't forget to bring comfortable shoes for walking, plus a pair of closed shoes/gumboots/wellington boots for wet days

Travel Light we took a small carry-on and did not regret it. In Ireland you are more likely to have to carry your luggage around, especially if you are traveling by car.

Accessories/Extras: The wet weather Ireland experiences means visitors should be prepared with some accessories and extras which can help keep dry. A good quality waterproof jacket is essential if staying outside, as well as a sturdy umbrella and possibly some waterproof socks. A scarf, gloves, and a hat will all help keep you warm and comfortable. A pair of binoculars is also worthwhile if you’re planning to go on any outdoor expeditions. Essentials: A few handy items such as a map or guidebook can come in quite handy while in Ireland. Also make sure to bring a charger or powerbank for your phone or other devices. An adapter plug is also useful if you're traveling from a country with different plug types. Don't forget to pack any necessary medications and personal toiletries.

Outdoor Gear: If you plan on exploring Ireland's stunning landscapes and engaging in outdoor activities, it's important to have appropriate gear. Consider bringing sturdy hiking boots or walking shoes with good traction. A backpack can be useful for carrying essentials during hikes or day trips. Depending on the season and activities you have planned, you might also want to pack a swimsuit for visiting beaches or taking a dip in Ireland's lakes and rivers.

Other essentials to pack include:

Medications: If you take any prescription medications, be sure to bring an ample supply for the duration of your trip. It's also a good idea to carry a copy of your prescriptions and any necessary medical documents.

Travel documents: Don't forget your passport, visa (if required), and any other necessary travel documents. It's a good idea to make photocopies or take pictures of these documents and keep them in a separate place in case of loss or theft.

Money: While credit cards are widely accepted in Ireland, it's a good idea to carry some cash for smaller establishments or places that may not accept cards. Consider having a mix of euros in different denominations.

Toiletries: Pack your toiletries such as toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, and any other personal care items you may need. Remember to pack travel-sized toiletries if you're planning to carry them in your carry-on luggage.

Travel adapter: Ireland uses the Type G electrical plug, so if your devices have a different plug type, you'll need a travel adapter to plug them into Irish sockets.

Camera: Ireland is known for its stunning landscapes, so don't forget to bring a camera or smartphone to capture the beautiful scenery.

Travel guidebook or apps: A travel guidebook or a travel app on your phone can provide valuable information about attractions, dining options, and local customs. It's handy to have this information readily available.

Snacks and water bottle: It's always a good idea to have some snacks and a reusable water bottle with you, especially if you're planning to spend a lot of time outdoors or in rural areas.
